Bollywood Movies That Captured Punjabi Flavor At Its Finest!

For ages now, Bollywood has had a soft corner for the land of the exuberant- Punjab! You can’t blame them really; the infectious energy, the serene landscapes and irresistible, foot-tapping music have all become a staple of the Hindi film industry. So we thought we’d give you a lowdown of some films that highlighted the best of Punjab and successfully emulated its wonderful essence on the silver screen.

Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year

Ranbir Kapoor left everyone stunned with his role as Harpreet Singh Bedi a.k.a Rocket Singh, in a film that gained instant popularity after release. Not only does the film echo the honest morals and the inherent work ethic of the Punjabi people; it weaves these values into a fun, catchy storyline that keeps audiences glued to the screen. Also, kudos to Ranbir Kapoor for picking up the mannerisms and trivial aspects of the character; right from his look to how he adjusts his turban every time he passes a mirror!

Singh is Kinng

With a worthy nomination at the Asian Film Awards for the Best Actor, Akshay Kumar’s portrayal of Happy Singh, a happy-go-lucky villager who becomes king of the underworld, became a cult-hit among viewers. The Punjabi flavor in the entire film is intense and wholesome throughout, with memorable performances from the absent minded Mika (Javed Jaffrey) and Lakhan Singh (Sonu Sood). Add to that a soundtrack peppered with Punjabi flavor like Singh is Kinng and Teri Ore, and you’ve got a superhit you can’t afford to miss!

Namaste London

Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif once again impressed in a film with a predominant Punjabi theme. Typical Punjabi names like Arjun Ballu Singh (Akshay) and Jasmeet Malhotra (Kat) aside, the film was a superhit thanks to its theme of NRIs getting disillusioned with life abroad and leaving their desi ideals and traditions behind. Add to that some truly memorable tunes like Main Jahan Rahoon and Rafta Rafta, and the film had audiences hooting for more!

Son of Sardaar

Another film that struck a chord with audiences, Son of Sardaar saw Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt face off in a hilarious sequence of events that left audiences laughing in delight. If the comical element wasn’t enough, watching Salman Khan in an extended appearance, dancing alongside the two sardars in ‘Po Po’ was a treat in itself!

Gadar - Ek Prem Katha

Hailed as one of the biggest blockbusters in the history of Indian cinema, Gadar - Ek Prem Katha created gadar at the Box Office with landmark collections, second only to Sholay in terms of tickets sold in theaters. With Sunny Deol and Amisha leading charge, the film combined unforgettable Punjabi tunes and combined them with a powerful patriotic fervor to deliver a knockout Punjabi punch!

Yamla Pagla Deewana

With father and sons setting the screen on fire, Yamla Pagla Deewana delivered exactly what it promised – wacky, hilarious with a dash of Punjabi tadka! Everything from the obsession with Canada, to the drunk, hysterical banter that takes place in Punjabi family; YPD takes the trio of Dharmendra, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol to provide for pure, rib-tickling Punjabi entertainment at its best!

Jab We Met

Imitiaz Ali’s masterpiece is often judged as the yardstick for unforgettable love stories in Bollywood. Jab We Met attained cult-status because of multiple reasons; one of them was the peppy and crazy Geet (Kareena Kapoor), and her Punjabi family with a host of colorful characters – from the wise old man of the family, Geet’s grandfather (Dara Singh) to the fiery and passionate uncle (Pavan Malhotra). Add to that some truly memorable songs and dialogues like ‘Nahi dekhne mujhe ganne ke khet!’ and you have a Punjabi blockbuster etched in the minds of every Bollywood fanatic!

Love Aaj Kal

Yet another gem from the ingenious Imtiaz Ali, Love Aaj Kal was a love story that captured the imagination of audiences. Starring Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan, this love story saw two parallel romances unfold; one of Veer Singh (Rishi Kapoor) with Lovely, and the other between Jai (Saif Ali Khan) and Meera (Deepika Padukone). Also watch Saif pull off the role of a sardar, we guarantee it’s one of the cutest avatars you’ll see him in!

Tune in to Zee Cinema on Saturday, 30th January, 2016 at 8 PM to watch Akshay Kumar, Amy Jackson, Kay Kay Menon and others in the joyride, Singh Is Bliing.
